GWO HO HO by Scutigera GWO HO HO by Scutigera
This is a colored pencil sketch of Ighoude the Plague emerging from the shadows. I drew this for an open-ended six-hour drawing assignment for my spring 2010 art class.

For the most part, I'm happy with how this came out. I drew it because I wanted to improve on my previous color illustrations of this jolly undead beast, especially since I now know much more about goblin shark facial anatomy (specifically, the mechanism by which their jaw can protrude and retract). Furthermore, it was a chance to hint at how amorphous his body can be--note the fleshy pseudopod extending from his index finger through his rostrum (that's the term for a shark's snout, if you didn't already know).

I tried to make the lighting realistic, and I used a photo of my own hand taken under high-contrast light to make sure I got the shadows right. However, the shading of Ighoude's face is far from realistic. This is mostly because I fear that casting deep shadows on his face would obscure his facial details and expression. Therefore I chose to compromise realism a bit for the sake of clarity.

You can see a few flies dotting the background if you look closely. I would have drawn more of them but I ran out of stamina at that point.

The faintly-visible smog streaming from Ighoude's back is one colorful (read: disgusting) aspect of him that I haven't discussed in previously-submitted images, so here goes. The smog is a cocktail of heated gasses generated from his body's perpetual decomposition. The chimney-like tubes on his back serve to channel and expell these biproducts of bacterial activity, mostly to prevent massive internal hemorrhaging. Yes, this is as gross as it sounds. Ighoude is a character who revels in being as physically revolting as possible.

Colored pencil? Fantastic! Goodness he's pretty, even if he does smell terrible. At least he's warm~

Really impressive. Love the combination of colors. How big is it?

How big is Ighoude, or how big is the picture? Ighoude the Plague is comparable in size to an elephant or rhinoceros. The original picture is roughly 17" by 12".

Yes, six hours. I was keeping track of the time. It would have taken much longer if I'd attempted to add a background or more flies.

If anyone can appreciate a sickly mix of colors, it's you!

This turned out (sorry Ighoude) absolutely beautiful! All the little details rendered look 3D, so I'm having a great time looking at everything. Such a great character design, I'm happy to see 'em drawn out with such care. You did a really good job using the medium, I think it lends it self perfectly to colored pencil!

What did your classmates think when you were drawing this?? XD

My classmates didn't see the picture until it was finished, but when we were critiquing each other's finished drawings, several of the students commented that mine was "awesome," "badass," or "the coolest thing I've ever seen." They also commented that the colors looked so faint on the black paper that it was hard to discern the picture from a distance. I tried to correct that in this digital copy by upping the color saturation and contrast.

I'm flattered that you like the drawing so much. And you needn't apologize to Ighoude for finding him beautiful. After all, he thinks he is the most beautiful thing in the universe.

Y'know, in Iceland, putrefied shark meat is sometimes served as--well, I'm not sure it could be called a delicacy among locals so much as an oddity that exists to baffle tourists... But evidently someone must have decided a rotting shark (which Ighoude partially is) looked edible. But I ramble.

A day when he does not look colorful and happy is a sad day indeed.

Mwahaha! Just as planned! (Seriously, though, I'd love to see what he'd look like in your style.)
I'm glad you think he's beautiful. In fact, by rendering him in so many bright colors, I hope to make him paradoxically appear both disgusting and beautiful, so as to create a tension between the two opposites in the viewer's mind and blah blah blah pretentious artsy babble.
A shame his wrist booty is facing away from the viewer in this picture, eh?

That could give me something to do while I'm visiting my grandparents in France next month. XD
FAMILY VISIT AND A HANDSHARKBEAST!

He's like one of those mantis shrimp. So beautiful, and yet you don't want one in your fish tank... or... something.
Well, whatever. I'd still take him out to nightclubs and all. Oooooh yeeeeeah. >BU

A TERRIBLE SHAME. *sigh*
