When newborns attack by Scutigera When newborns attack by Scutigera
Edit: Watermark added because the image has been reuploaded on other websites without attribution. Now its attribution comes built-in! How convenient!

Edit: This used to be titled "When hatchlings attack," but ColorBug informed me that garter snakes are among the snake species that give live birth rather than laying eggs.

EKANS used BITE!
It's not very effective...

I just had to get that Pokemon reference out of the way.

This is a tiny garter snake (genus Thamnophis) hatchling I found in Itasca State Park, MN, where it was sunning itself on a road. As I had my camera with me, I caught the snake and took several photos of it before releasing it where I'd found it. The hatchling was not harmed in the process but was understandably terrified about being handled by some huge alien monster, and several times it tried to bite my fingers in self-defense. However, its teeth were so tiny that they didn't hurt and couldn't break my skin. So rather than drop the snake when it tried to dig its teeth into my finger, I took attacking-snake photos, and this one turned out the best.

Non-Venomous Garter Snake. But don't be fooled by the eyes of a snake. Snakes has the ability to slit and circlize their eyes! Never use eyes as a way to tell if they are or not.

Snakes has the ability to slit and circlize their eyes! Never use eyes as a way to tell if they are or not. They also have the ability to flatten their heads to make themselves look venomous, when they aren't.

Actually, it is a key in determining if a snake is dangerous or not. It is important to be slow in these situations and not quick to judgment. Don't just grab the snake because it has round eyes. I am not saying that. Best to leave all snakes alone. Also, their patterns make a difference too. I can tell a Bullsnake from a rattle with ease. A bullsnake can mimic a rattle sound and it can make its head into a diamond. It has a fierce aggressive nature and a heck of a bite. I know. Sweating a little...  They can instantly draw blood and lots of it. They are great at hunting mice. But they are not dangerous. I have had to relocate many harmless bullsnakes because people think they look and sound too dangerous. This one is a garter snake. Some species will bite and they will keep bitting. It can be really hard to get them the let go if you don't know what you are doing. Some species of garter snakes can make their head into a diamond but their eyes will always be round.

Some species can slit their eyes tho. And yeah I understand. Don't be quick to judge. All kinds of snakes can mimic a rattle snake. My Capped Cobra mimics a rattler.

Well, it is also important to learn about the snakes in your area too. The more nocturnal ones can potentially change their eyes but that is understandable. There are always things that break rules but that is a common rule for my location. There are very little dangerous snakes in my neighborhood. They all do different things but It is a good way for me to tell. Maybe with your snake. Most snakes will save their venom for actual food so I am never too worried I just want to stay out of their way and they can stay out of mine. Well unless they need to be relocated.

Dawww! That's happened to me, too (half my childhood consisted of either catching frogs or catching snakes, because I grew up in a remote area which meant 90% of my entertainment had to be found outside, and we had a huge pond...), and then once they noticed I'm no harm and not edible they just wrapped their little tails around my fingers to stay on and I wanted to let them go even less. I hope it didn't spray, though! I don't know if hatchling garter snakes can do that, but PHEW, I learned the hard way from adults that they can really stink the place (or you...) up.

Does every snake can open its mouth so widely?!

:iconpunkbeats:

Absolutely! Snakes do not have the ability to chew, so in order to feed, they must swallow their prey whole. Snakes have evolved to have the ability to unhinge their jaws which allow therefore allowing more room in their mouths for large prey that wouldn't normally fit.

(Late reply because I haven't checked this in forever) I've seen the photo circulating on Tumblr and other places without attribution. I didn't put a watermark on it until after it had been stolen, so the damage had already been done. It's frustrating, to say the least.
